Should You Have a First Look Before an Outdoor Ceremony?
If you're planning an outdoor wedding, there's one timeline decision that's worth giving a little extra thought: should you do a first look?
As with most wedding planning decisions, there isn't a right or wrong answer. We've seen beautiful weddings at Samuel Cedars with and without first looks.
That said, outdoor weddings do have one unique factor that often makes a first look worth considering.
Outdoor Conditions Can Change Quickly
One of the beautiful things about an outdoor wedding is that every day looks a little different.
The downside?
The weather can change just as quickly.
Clouds roll in. The wind picks up. A passing shower delays the ceremony by twenty minutes. The temperature ends up much warmer than anyone expected.
Having a first look gives your timeline a little more breathing room if any of those things happen.
More Flexibility Throughout the Day
One of the biggest advantages of a first look is flexibility.
Because you've already seen each other, many of your portraits and wedding party photos can happen before the ceremony. If the weather changes or your ceremony starts a little later than planned, you already have many of the day's biggest moments checked off your list.
Instead of feeling rushed afterward, you have more options.
That flexibility can be especially valuable for outdoor weddings where you're working with natural light and unpredictable Missouri weather.
It Doesn't Make the Ceremony Less Meaningful
This is probably the biggest concern couples have.
Many worry that if they see each other before the ceremony, they'll lose that emotional moment of walking down the aisle.
In our experience, that simply isn't the case.
The first look is usually quiet and private.
The ceremony is something completely different. It's the moment you make your vows surrounded by your family and friends, and that feeling is difficult to put into words.
The emotions are different, but both moments are incredibly special.
There Are Still Great Reasons to Wait
Of course, not every couple wants a first look.
If you've always imagined seeing each other for the first time during the ceremony, that's a wonderful tradition to keep.
Your wedding should reflect your relationship, not whatever happens to be trending.
The most important thing is choosing the option that feels right for the two of you.
Talk Through Your Timeline
Before making your decision, spend a little time talking through your wedding day timeline with your venue and vendor team.
Sometimes a first look makes perfect sense.
Other times, waiting until the ceremony works beautifully.
It simply depends on your priorities, your guest count, the season, and how you'd like your day to flow.
One thing we've learned from hosting outdoor weddings over the years is that a little flexibility goes a long way. If you're on the fence, a first look can provide that flexibility while still leaving plenty of room for an emotional and memorable ceremony.
