There's just something about outdoor wedding photos.
Even couples who wouldn't describe themselves as "outdoorsy" often find themselves drawn to images filled with soft light, trees, movement, and wide open spaces.
Part of that is simply because nature makes a beautiful backdrop. But there's also something about being outside that tends to make wedding photos feel a little more relaxed.
Natural Light Makes a Difference
Good light can completely change the feel of a photograph, and outdoor weddings give photographers plenty to work with.
Depending on the time of day, you can have soft light under the trees, bright open areas, beautiful backlighting, or that warm glow around sunset.
And because the light changes throughout the day, your wedding gallery naturally gets some variety too.
There's Room to Move
Some of the most natural wedding photos happen when you're not standing perfectly still looking at the camera.
Walking together. Laughing. Talking. Fixing a veil that's blowing in the wind.
Outdoor spaces give couples room to move, which can make portraits feel less like "picture time" and more like a few minutes spent together.
At Samuel Cedars, we have several different areas around the property that allow couples and wedding parties to spread out and move around without feeling confined to one specific photo location.
Nature Gives You a Beautiful Backdrop Without Trying Too Hard
Trees are pretty.
That's really all there is to it.
You don't need an elaborate backdrop when you're already surrounded by greenery, seasonal plants, open sky, and natural textures.
Even as the seasons change, the property simply gives you a different look. Bright green spring and summer photos feel completely different from the deeper colors of fall, but both photograph beautifully.
Being Outside Can Help People Relax
Maybe there's some scientific explanation for this one, but we think nature just brings out the best in people.
There's something about stepping away from the activity of the wedding day and walking outside for a few minutes that gives couples a chance to reset.
You can breathe.
You can talk.
You can actually look at each other and realize, "Oh yeah. We just got married."
Those little moments often create the photos that feel the most like you.
You Get Variety Without Going Anywhere
Another advantage of an outdoor venue is how many different looks you can create without leaving the property.
At Samuel Cedars, you can have portraits surrounded by cedar trees, along the pathway, near the ceremony space, around the reception hall, and in more open areas of the property.
Your photographer doesn't have to manufacture a dozen different backgrounds. They're already there.
Don't Forget About Golden Hour
Of course, we can't talk about outdoor wedding photos without mentioning golden hour.
That soft evening light before sunset can be absolutely beautiful.
If portraits are important to you, it's worth checking the sunset time for your wedding date and leaving a few minutes open in your timeline.
You don't need an hour-long photo session. Sometimes stepping outside for ten or fifteen minutes is plenty.
Outdoor wedding photos aren't beautiful because everything is perfectly posed.
Usually, it's the opposite.
The movement, changing light, natural surroundings, and little unscripted moments are exactly what make them feel so relaxed and genuine.
And we think that's a pretty great way to remember your wedding day.
